History of the Sun Country PGA

Background and Need for a New Section

Initially, New Mexico golf professionals were part of the Southwest PGA Section, which was dominated by Arizona. However, Arizona and New Mexico had opposing peak seasons; New Mexico’s golf season thrived in the summer, while Arizona’s was in the winter. This mismatch often led to logistical and scheduling challenges. Additionally, as the Arizona chapter grew, it became clear that the unique needs of New Mexico golfers and pros were not being fully represented.

The Push for Independence

In the 1970s, a group of New Mexico-based PGA members, including Paul Brilliant, recognized the need for a separate section that would better serve New Mexico and best Texas golf professionals. Working with Herb Wimberly, Brilliant, who was the assistant professional at the time, began the effort to create an independent section. At this time, New Mexico had fewer than 25 PGA members, well below the usual requirement to form a new section. However, they gained support by demonstrating the viability and necessity of a distinct section, much like Hawaii had done when separating from Southern California.

Gaining Support and Securing Funding

To cover the costs of creating the new section, Brilliant and his colleagues relied on the generosity of PGA tour members, like Lee Trevino. Trevino, who frequently played and won in New Mexico, donated his tournament winnings to support the cause. With these funds, Paul Brilliant traveled to PGA meetings, lobbied other sections for their support, and advocated for voting rights for assistant professionals. These efforts not only led to New Mexico's section

status but also helped modernize voting privileges within the PGA.

Formalizing the Sun Country Section

With sufficient support and lobbying, the Sun Country PGA was formally recognized, granting New Mexico and West Texas an independent section within the PGA of America. The section’s name, "Sun Country," was inspired by the Sun Country Open, a New Mexico tournament sponsored by farmers and Merchants Bank, a name that resonated with the local golf community.

Legacy and Impact

Paul Brilliant’s efforts helped lay the groundwork for a vibrant and self-sustaining golf community in the Sun Country region. Today, the Sun Country PGA stands as a testament to his and other early members' dedication to the game and its growth in New Mexico and West Texas. The section now operates with the resources and independence necessary to support golf professionals, tournaments, junior golf programs, and player development across

the region.
